Topics relate to Getty collections, initiatives, and broad research interests. The journal welcomes a diversity of perspectives and methodological approaches, and seeks to include work that expands narratives on global culture.
This issue features essays on a group of mostly unpublished terracotta loom weights dating from the third to second century BCE; the significance of palms in the nineteenth-century work of geographer and naturalist Alexander von Humboldt and botanist Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius; Jacques Joseph (James) Tissot’s paintings and etchings of activity on the river Thames following his 1871 relocation to London; polychrome Spanish sculpture from the late Gothic period in the international art market at the turn of the twentieth century; and materiality in the work of American artist Jay DeFeo between the 1950s and 1980s. Shorter texts include notices on the role of the human body as scale in a series by Brazilian photographer Marc Ferrez documenting the construction of dams, reservoirs, and other infrastructure for Rio de Janeiro’s new water supply systems between 1876 and 1882; and the letters between Russian artist El Lissitzky and Lithuanian-born, Vienna-based Jewish art historian Fannina Halle in the 1920s.
